What is Long-Term Care?

Long-term care facilities are governed by legislated standards and government regulations. Licensing by the Province and regular inspections by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care ensure quality care in the programs and services provided by long-term care facilities. Facilities are required to post and/or make available the Facility Review Summary Reports to families and to current and prospective residents. Long-term care facilities provide services necessary to persons needing care that can no longer be provided in the community.

Services provided in long-term care facilities include:

  • Nursing and personal care
  • Secure floor/area for cognitively impaired residents
  • Regular and emergency medical care by on-call physicians
  • Medical treatment and medication prescription and administration
  • Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
  • Climate controlled environment
  • Meals including therapeutic diets and snacks
  • Housekeeping services
  • Laundry services
  • Room maintenance services
  • Social and recreational programs
  • Palliative Care
  • Some homes provide dialysis and other specialized services
  • Temporary respite care (Labdara does not offer respite care or short-term stays)
